San Francisco’s SFJAZZ Collective is one of the most exciting bands on the
planet. *The New York Times* declares that “the standard of musicianship
here, in terms of solo firepower, could hardly be higher.”

Each year the ensemble performs an entirely new list of works consisting of
compositions of a modern jazz master (in new arrangements). Past programs
have included the music of Ornette Coleman (2004), John Coltrane (2005),
Thelonious Monk (2006), Herbie Hancock (2007), Wayne Shorter (2008) and,
now, McCoy Tyner (2009). The members also contribute original music for the

The Vancouver Creative Music Institute (VCMI) is an intensive 5-day program
that brings together leading international practitioners of creative music

collaborative music-making through improvisation, new compositional
techniques, and the application of new technologies.

The High School Jazz Intensive offers students a chance to:

   - Play in a select big band conducted by jazz master flutist/composer
   Nicole Mitchell
   - Learn and rehearse a broad range of jazz repertoire
   - Participate in workshops led by some of the world's finest musicians
   - Receive tickets to selected Jazz Festival shows
   - Perform in the TD Canada Trust Vancouver International Jazz Festival

The High School Jazz Intensive takes place *June 26 to July 5, 2009* and is
open by audition to students in grade 10, 11, and 12 in the BC Lower
Mainland:

Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, Abbotsford,
Anmore, Belcarra, Bowen Island, Coquitlam, Delta, Langley, Lions Bay, Maple
Ridge, New Westminster, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Surrey,
White Rock, Agassiz, Aldergrove, Chilliwack, Fort Langley, Fraser Valley,
