With all due respect to Duke Dubois, his protegés and his undeniable
contributions to the jazz industry there is no way to put a positive
spin on the departure of Dave Love from Heads Up. Granted by selling
the label he gave up control but it was his baby and the imprint is
coming off an AWESOME year of releases that any label would envy. As
a lover of fusion -- which was the catalyst that led me to discover
over 30 years ago the jazz canon as a whole in the first place -- I
was a huge fan of almost everything Dave released.
I do not know Mr. Wexler and I am sure he is competent but competence
does not automatically imply vision and just because he worked under
Duke Dubois does not in my humble opinion sanctify him in any way.
While Mr. Wexler might have other qualities the "powers that be" at
Concord value, there is no denying that in Dave they have lost an
executive whose passion and ears and lifelong dedication to music can
never be replaced. This, like the fact that EMI did not renew veteran
Blue Note executive Tom Evered's contract last year, is another
example of what can only be seen as nearsightedness and, for lack of a
better word, fear on the part of a corporation that is emulating an
ostrich.
Just my $00.02.
Mitchell
