Interesting question, I think the big difference is that Blue Note usually
provided (and paid for) rehearsal time which led to more sophisticated
arrangements, a more consistent presentation, and more original
compositions. Many of Prestige's sessions were blowing dates in which
(admittedly very talented) artists would be put into a head-blow-head
situation without rehearsal time. In fact, Prestige at one time was
referred to as a junkie's label because strung-out musicians could come in,
do a blowing date for a flat fee and fix (without retaining any rights to
the material). Notwithstanding, some classic material was produced for
Prestige but I think that attitude towards the rehearsal time and the
artists personal as well as artistic development tips the hat to Blue Note
