2019 JazzWeek Awards presented at JazzWeek Summit in San Jose

San Jose, California – Winners in 11 categories were announced at an awards reception August 8 in San Jose at the JazzWeek Summit. Veteran promoter Neal Sapper was named the recipient of the Duke Dubois Humanitarian Award, the Scott Willis Jazz Impact Award was given posthumously to WRTI, Philadelphia, host Jeff Duperon, and announced as the winner of the Tom “The Jazzman” Mallison Lifetime Achievement Award was retiring WBGO host Rhonda Hamilton.

The following are the winners for 2019:

Stations of the year

Recognizing outstanding presentation, community service and involvement, professionalism, and participation in the JazzWeek community.

Station of the Year – 40 hours or more per week of jazz

WGMC, Rochester

Station of the Year – Fewer than 40 hours per week of jazz

WGBH, Boston

Internet, Non-Terrestrial, or Syndicator of the Year

Jazz After Hours, Public Radio International

Presenter of the year

Recognizing a jazz broadcaster with exceptional presentation and communications skills, for an outstanding individual who hosts or produces a jazz program.

Record Label of the Year

This category recognizes the overall quality of releases, production values, and artist support for the year’s outstanding record label.

HighNote/Savant

Programmer of the Year – The Bobby Jackson Award, selected by record promoters and labels

The recipient of the award should demonstrate exceptional programming ability, professionalism, and active participation in the JazzWeek community.

Programmer of the Year, Terrestrial

Kayonne Riley, WUCF

Programmer of the Year, Internet, Non-Terrestrial, or Syndicated

Jeff Hanley, Jazz After Hours, Public Radio International

Promoter or Promotion Company of the Year – The Dick LaPalm Award, selected by broadcasters and programmers

The promoter/company should demonstrate outstanding communication, consistent quality of releases, and strong artist support, as well as active participation in the JazzWeek community.
